The ERCIM Selection Committee for the Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award unanimously selected Rianne de Heide, nominated by CWI, as the winner for 2023. An honorary mention is given to Denis Merigoux from Inria.
Dr. Rianne de Heide's research activity stands out for its quality and breadth. Her work covers a wide variety of topics within the general field of mathematical statistics, with focus on learning from data. In her work, Bayesian learning is used as a tool, sometimes critically evaluated, sometimes extended, always with a strong mathematical-theoretical component. Her work reaches breadth by (a) the aspects of learning from data/statistics that are studied: optional stopping, misspecification (statistics with incorrect but useful models), philosophical problems in induction, bandits, and (b) the scope across various other disciplines: philosophy and logic, psychology, and machine learning and AI.

The Institute of Software Engineering and Technology (ITIS, or ITIS Software) is a unit of the University of Malaga dedicated to scientific and technical research [L1]. The ERCIM Ethics Working Group organised jointly with Inria and CNPEN (the French National Pilot Committee for Digital Ethics) a forum targeted at scientists and Research Ethics Boards on 17-18 October 2022 in Paris. This successful event, which brought together researchers interested in ethics of digital and connected technologies, consisted of keynotes, presentations and tutorials, and provided ample space for interactive sessions and open discussions.

Fourteen leading European organisations join forces to provide a framework for green and privacy-preserving data operations in an edge-to-cloud architecture.
Existing network architectures offer a variety of options for storage and analysis of data. Currently, however, network architecture follows a cloud-based logic thereby hampering the exploitation of distributed architectures’ potential. Therefore, organisations that operate on an edge-to-cloud architecture have to deal with suboptimal results with regards to energy efficiency, computation and resources allocation for data storage and management performance. This problem is most relevant in large organisations with many distributed entities, such as public administrations, or organisations that make an intensive use of sensors, such as the ones operating in Industry 4.0.

The ERCIM Cor Baayen Award selection committee has unanimously selected Tomasz Kociumaka as the winner of the competition for the 2021 ERCIM Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award. Tomasz Kociumaka was nominated by the University of Warsaw, which awarded him a PhD in 2019. Tomasz then worked at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, and he is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, USA.

JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) are organizing the 2nd joint workshop in order to accelerate international communication and collaboration. The online workshop aims to present future visions and recent results of research conducted in the context of the JST AIP (Advanced Integrated Intelligence Platform) project as well as from European institutions. This event will provide the opportunity to invited participants from Japan and Europe to familiarize themselves with recent research interests and consider collaboration prospects that will arise in the context of the Horizon Europe framework program or relevant initiatives from JST. The programme includes keynote talks from Takayuki Ito (Kyoto University), "An Agent that Facilitates Crowd Discussion", and from Fabio Martinelli (Research Director, CNR IIT) "Data usage control for data sovereignty".
