The USEweb Group

by Yves Peynaud

In answer to the ever growing demand for rapidly transferring Web technologies into applications, INRIA has launched 'The USEweb Group' in January 1997. This is a network of industrial and academic organizations interested in the application domains of the World Wide Web, connected together to progress at group speed and to take up with the incredibly fast progression of Web technologies.

The USEweb Group is organized along three application domains: Electronic Commerce, Intranet, and Publishing. Working groups are established in each domain, either working on general issues and questions of the domain, or dedicated to a specific topic of the domain, as for example searching for partners for launching a European project. All employees of USEweb Group member organizations can participate to any working group (and can set-up a new working group), provided that they have an internet connection: indeed, the groups heavily rely upon Web technologies for working together, and are therefore called WebGroups.

As of August 1997, more than 100 organizations from 20 countries have joined, with various profiles: either Web user, Web product or service providers, research centers or consulting and information centers, among them the ERCIM institutes FORTH, INESC, GMD, SISU and INRIA. As of August 1997, more than 100 organizations from 20 countries have joined, with various profiles: either Web user, Web product or service providers, research centers or consulting and information centers. Participating to the USEweb Group is free of charge.

More information and the on-line registration form can be found in the public part of the USEweb Group site: http://usewebgroup.inria.fr. When registered, members will be returned an account to access the member part of the site.
