3rd ERCIM Workshop on User Interfaces for All

by Constantine Stephanidis and Noëlle Carbonell

The 3rd ERCIM Workshop on "User Interfaces for All" took place at Obernai, France, 3-4 November 1997 and was organised by INRIA Lorraine (Noelle Carbonell). The Workshop built upon the results of the two previous Workshops held at ICS-FORTH, Crete, Greece, 30-31 October 1995, and Prague, Czech Republic, 7-8 November 1996. This yearly ERCIM Workshop aims to stimulate further discussion on the state of the art in work committed to the promotion of the 'Design for All' principle in the field of Human-Computer Interaction, and to consolidate recent work in the areas of adaptation (adaptability and adaptivity), platform independence and interoperability, multimodality, interaction metaphors, user empowerment, ergonomic and human factors guidelines, multi-linguality, internationalisation and localisation of interactive applications, etc.

Seven paper submissions were accepted as long papers, seventeen as short papers, and six as poster presentations. Also, the Workshop featured one position paper and two invited speakers:

On the 5th of November 1997, the meetings of the Workshop Programme Committee and the ERCIM Working Group on 'User Interfaces for All' took place at the same location. A series of activities was discussed and planned, aimed at bringing closer together researchers and teams working in the different ERCIM institutes, as well as industrial actors and other organisations across the world with the common objective to work towards making interactive applications and services accessible and usable by all potential users. Specific collaborative R&D activities and project proposals have been initiated.

The Proceedings of the Workshop will be made electronically available via the Web site of the ERCIM Working Group on User Interfaces for all at: http://www.ics.forth.gr/ercim-wg-ui4all
