ERCIM News No.19 - October 1995

On the 3rd of June 1994, the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) inaugurated its new facilities, in an official ceremony honoured with the presence of the Minister of Industry, Energy, Technology, and Commerce, senior government officials, members of the Greek Parliament, the Rector of the University of Crete, and other distinguished guests. The impressive, by all counts, new buildings are situated at the Science and Technology Park of Crete, next to the University campus, approximately 7 Km west of the city of Heraklion on the island of Crete. The spacious modern buildings, with an architectural style reminiscent of ancient times and fully equipped with high tech facilities, will eventually house four of the seven Institutes of FORTH: The Institute of Computer Science (ICS), the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics (IACM), the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL), and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB).

At the International Congress of Mathematicians (Zürich - August 3-11, 94) two INRIA researchers were asked to give invited talks. J.P. QUADRAT from INRIA-Rocquencourt gave a talk entitled "Max-Plus Algebra and Application to Optimal Control" and E. PARDOUX from INRIA-Sophia and Université de Provence on "Backward Stochastic Differential Equations and Applications".

INRIA has signed a three year collaboration agreement with SRI International (USA) in July. The topics are Computer Cartography and Vision for Mobile Robotics. O. Faugeras and M. Berthod are the two senior scientists involved as a starting point.
