Third Interlink-Workshop on Intelligent Cognitive Systems
University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA
4-5 September 2008

Working Group Leader: Rüdiger Dillmann

Organizers:

  • Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Dillmann (University of Karlsruhe, Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Stefan Schaal (University of Southern California, USA)
  • Dr. Tamim Asfour (University of Karlsruhe, Germany)

Description and Goal of Workshop « Intelligent Cognitive Systems »:

Research on cognitive systems will give an opportunity for numerous and important applications which are under way and that span a wide range of disciplines such as space applications, industry and domestic assistance. The successful attempts in building artificial intelligent cognitive systems are still limited to systems designed for “sunshine” environments with limited scope and simple tasks. The transferability of the developed skills and abilities to varying contexts and tasks without costly redesign of specific solutions is still impossible. Therefore, key research activities in the future should be devoted to the definition of rich cognitive challenges which are measurable and scalable in an open scenario under changing conditions, and to the development of measures, metrics and benchmarks that highlight and focus on transferability rather than performance.

A strong objective of this InterLink Thematic Area is to identify future research directions, to develop a roadmap for research in cognitive systems and to explore possibilities for international cooperation. Such an international cooperation will provide an opportunity to realise a fruitful cross-fertilisation giving technical oriented scientists new inspiration from biology and opening cognitive scientists’ new ways to prove and evaluate their models. Furthermore, international cooperation activities in an interdisciplinary research area will contribute significantly to the understanding of the human brain as it is the driving force for the development of intelligent cognitive robots and new technologies.

The goal of this workshop is to continue the discussion on specific and basic questions related to the definition of cognitive systems, models of cognition, enabling technologies to study cognition in both natural and technical systems and to develop an initial draft of a research roadmap on intelligent cognitive systems. Such a research roadmap is to be used as input for different types of research funding organizations at the national and the international level, e.g., for the European Commission when defining their next research program.

Travel, Venue and Accommodation:

The workshop was hosted by the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Prof. Dr. Stefan Schaal and took place in the hotel "Doubletree Guest Suites Santa Monica, California Doubletree Guest Suites Santa Monica, California (http://doubletree1.hilton.com/en_US/dt/hotel/SMOPCDT/index.do )

Information on reimbursement:

Please note that there are no registration fees but registration is mandatory for participating in the workshop.

InterLink is a project funded by the European Commission. Thus, there are a few rules to abide by when requesting reimbursement for travel related expenses:
  • For travel by air, economy class air fare only will be reimbursed. The purchase of modifiable/refundable plane tickets is allowed when prior permission has been obtained from the ERCIM administration.
  • For travel by air, the orginal ticket plus the original boarding pass ticket stubs must be submitted along with the reimbursement form (to be provided at the venue).
  • For travel by train, first class train tickets are allowed.
  • For travel by car, the amount accepted for reimbursement equals the cost of a first class train ticket for the same journey.
  • ERCIM will reimburse the hotel costs for the duration of the workshop. In addition, the hotel costs for the night of 3 September can be covered, and the night of 6 September as well (departure Sunday 7 September) if it results in a substantial reduction of the airfare for non local participants.
The Reimbursement Form should be completed and returned to ERCIM along with accompanying receipts by 6 October 2008.
